About

The Know4sure project is being funded by The Samuel and Eileen Gluyas Charitable Trust managed by Perpetual and the project is run by Children by Choice.

This information has been put together and written for young women 19 years and under in Queensland. While the info may be applicable to you if you are outside this area, please feel free to also check out the Children by Choice website or  Victoria Health website for more information about other states.

Children by Choice is located in Brisbane and has been around for over 40 years helping women with unplanned pregnancies through counselling, information and education.

We are a pro-choice services which means that we believe that each woman has the right to decide for herself what path she will take when it comes to her body.

Pro –choice means we want what you want. We aren’t pro abortion or pro parenting or anything in between.

We believe you are the expert in your life. We want to support YOUR decisions.

We have taken great care to ensure this information is accurate and up-to-date. We have also written this information by talking with young women who have experienced unplanned pregnancies – young women are the experts on this issue. There is a lot of information out there when you google terms like "holy crap i'm pregnant" “pregnancy” or “abortion” "I'm pregnant, what now?".  Anti-choice websites are very clever at disguising their message. Download our 'How safe is your search' factsheet to get some tips to ensure that what you’re reading is what you are after.

There are lots of websites out there that claim to support your choice, but they can have other subtle or sly, messages hidden in their words.

Some things to look out for:

  • When a website refers to ‘the baby’ – this is trying the create an emotional attachment by encouraging you to visualize a small child.
  • Use of extreme case scenarios eg : “symptoms of post abortion stress are hallucinations, suicidal thoughts, increased alcohol and drug use, and difficulty maintaining close relationships” – these are scare tactics. Many women report that they coped well after an abortion. You may feel a variety of feelings, both positive and negative, but extreme feelings like those mentioned are there to scare you, not help your decision making.
  • Success stories only from women who parent
  • Use of images of unborn fetuses

Don't forget to check out our PDF on "How safe is your search" - this might be helpful for all sorts of school projects too.
